BBQ'S, Bathing Suits, Cellulite Rants...

Who the hell thought of this shit? Seriously... how can I enjoy my bbq without protruding in a bathing suit, and how can I wear a bathing suit if I enjoy the hell out of bbq??? This isn't Rocket Science... when fat drippings from scrumptiously slathered meat go into your body, you don't go into a bathing suit! Who the hell thought of BBQ's during the Summertime? Probably some freaking fat hairy ass man. Why does BBQ and cold beer taste so good, yet it is sooo bad for you. Why do people like the Summertime. It's freaking hot and it sucks. Why am I sitting on the computer talking to myself and avoiding running off last nights carb consumption. Maybe because I want that cute red, gold, and green bikini... along with some bbq and beer too!

I think the most important lesson I was taught in life is to choose my battles. It's the one advice that has really helped me through business, parenting, and most important, life issues.

Most things in Life are irrelevant. What other people think is definitely one of them. People will always have things to say about your love life, and how you raise your child, your home, your business, your class, etc. Those are insecure people. They are irrelevant.

Life is all about learning, and at times, teaching. Even in High School I was a bit different than my peers. While most were grouped up constantly, I was just fine with one or two close friends. I am a very loyal person and loyalty tends to get diluted in numbers. Therefore, I didn't buy into the "group" mindset then, nor do I now as an adult.

In High School I did a report on Mob Mentality, it was quite interesting. What is even more interesting is I am seeing a lot of that now online and within various cliques. Bullies do come in adult size too.

That is why I choose my battles.... and your clique is definitely not one of them. I have a Special Needs Child to raise and a group of families to help. To your whole crew: Since we aren't friends please stay off my page, do not email my contacts to promote yourself, stop discussing me, and please move on. We can co-exist its apples and oranges.

C'mon World are you really surprised???

News:

When are we as a Community going to stop acting appalled and start being held accountable? When are we going to stop handing down our B.S. Character Flaws to our kids. If you know me you know I have always copped to my faults. A lot of my teen years were spent on restriction for saying "Yeah I did it... so what"... while the rest of the world went out and played. When my friends and I went out and partied, drugged & drank... I told my parents yup I messed up, I did it I was there.... while I buried many a friend too early and lost many friendships by being their scapegoat to their own insecurities and mishaps.

The result, I turned around and made my life better... For that I thank my parents. I thank them for making me understand that my life is no better than the next persons. I thank them for teaching me accountability.

So what the heck is going on in the news today? Oh your surprised.... lets break it down...

You beat someone on the bus??? Lets just forget the Autistic part... what the *^#% brought you to the point that you beat people on the street, in the bus, a spouse, a parent, a child?? Dude you are seriously effed up. If his parents didn't raise him somebody did... The system???? A caretaker???? Foster Care??? The Streets and the people that stepped over him as they went to work? Don't get me wrong, I don't feel sorry for the Devil. I feel sorry for those who allowed the Devil to take a child's soul and brought him to be such an Evil Man. I feel sorry for our Nation. Men and Women! I feel sorry for inner children everywhere. Verbal and Non-Verbal. Autistic, non Autistic.

Lets not forget the real problem here. Where is the blame? Seriously yes, as adults we need to be held accountable. But as a mom of a young child on the spectrum...

I had someone who i grew up with who is a mom to a typical child. She decided to leave a an event early, why? Because Tafari's meltdown was "too much" and she couldn't handle it.

What message are we sending our non-special needs youth?

If we don't accept special needs persons why should we expect them too? It doesn't matter if your kids are present or not. You must make the change within yourself to make your children believe your truth. You can't promote compassion and empathy when it's convenient.

Our Children are smart they are less jaded they read between the lines. Why are we surprised when they become Typical Adults with no compassion?

I understand it's not an excuse, but it is definitely food for thought. When are we going to start being responsible for the next generation instead of being "Appalled" when they've lived up to everything we denied them of...

Holly Robinson Peete Love

A few bloggers were contacted and asked to be a part of a private round table telephone conference interview with Holly Robinson Peete. Thank you to my favorite girl, and true Special Needs Comrade at Just Writing for advocating for us!

Ms. Peete is a Mother, a Wife, an Activist, an Actor, and Tv Host. She, her family, and most important, her daughter Ryan are very respected in many of our Spectrum Families hearts. I am proud that Autism in Long Beach was included in this exclusive interview! The picture here is of Rodney, Holly, Ryan, and my son Tafari.

A decade ago life in the Spectrum was a whole different world. I know the history of Autism and Parenthood. I relish in, and feel blessed that I am part of Autism today. I give my hat off to women like Holly Robinson Peete, and my friend and mentor, Amalia Starr. Amalia wrote "Raising Brandon". She was also a part of Ms. Robinson Peete's show "The Talk" last Friday.

I don't know if I could handle that time period when parents were frowned upon as insignificant and unintelligent in child-rearing. A time when Meltdowns were considered our fault. A time when we were looked at as incapable parents.

There was a time when Spectrum Mothers were called "Refrigerator Moms". I don't know what I would have done. I am sure I would've been locked up under the jailhouse like Sophia in the Color Purple. Can you say Sybil Brand early 80's.. yikes!

Refrigerator Mom: The term refrigerator mother was coined around 1950 as a label for mothers of children diagnosed with autism or schizophrenia. These mothers were often blamed for their children's atypical behavior, which included rigid rituals, speech difficulty, and self-isolation.

However now, with the help of people like Holly who have forums much bigger than ours, we now have a place where our Children, our Youth, our Spectrum Adults voices are heard and respected.

Our Round table Q & A:

Holly Robinson-Peete starts off with a bang.....

"We have so many more avenues and ways to get information on treatment now. Social media has been key. I remember trying to find a support group online and there was nothing." ~Holly Robinson Peete

and it goes on....

Emily: Our next question comes from Jane of Autism in Long Beach -- How do you balance working, being an Autism Advocate, Family, and attending to your Special Needs Son? What's your Secret? Please share for us moms in the same situation!

Holly Robinson Peete said.. "First I'd like to give a big shout out to Jane and Autism in Long Beach!" I don’t believe in balance. There really is no balance. You have some good days, and you have some days where you drop the ball. There really is no sense of pure balance. From my perspective, there are days I really achieve what I want to and then there are days I don’t do so well and I have to keep encouraging myself and patting myself on the back to move forward. In essence though, I feel so motivated by the change I see and the change I can affect. I think if you can find something you’re passionate about, that is what helps you move forward everyday. Advocating on behalf of the children and families affected by autism has become my therapy in a way and makes me feel like I am making a difference in other peoples’ lives and not just wallowing in my own situation.

The main issue that most parents have in dealing with Autism is finances and being able to pay for treatments. I want to make sure that other people know that I understand how much more difficult this journey can be when you don’t have the resources that I do to pay for these things. It’s therapeutic to talk about these things and to be an advocate who helps others families."

Next question was from a blogger Colorado Moms...

She asked how we keep the balance from our Adult youth becoming advocates without giving to much of their personal life and struggles.

"I feel like you must be eavesdropping on the Peete house -- that’s where we are right now. My son is 13. He’s very cognizant of the fact that he’s an autism advocate. He loves that. But he approached me when we did this segment for the show the other day that we pre-shot and he asked me not to talk about autism and puberty. I really wanted to talk about it because it’s such a big issue. Teenagers with Autism really go through puberty much differently and sometimes its harder for them. He asked me not to talk about him. There are definitely moments where he asks me to pull back and now I always ask him ahead of time how he feels about something."

I really loved that last line because we spend so much time trying to raise awareness to others that sometimes we tend to forget to stop... and just ask our kids. Holly Robinson Peete reminds us that our kids are the same as typical kids... they do get embarrassed!

Holly Robinson Peete seemed to really connect with her question. Mrs. Peete's son is becoming a young man and is definitely living life in the spotlight. The connection between Colorado Mom and HRP at that moment was like a firecracker on 4th of July! It was as if both of the light bulbs went on over their heads at the same time.... They were in the same place and it was full of Aut love. Those are the moments that give me goosebumps. These moms with older ones are paving the way so that my son will have an easier road to travel.

Nanette.... How do you feel about diet and as it relates to autism?

Ms. Peete stated in HER case her son had a gluten allergy...

I respect that and find it very responsible. She is stating the issue with HER son and not trying to push every child on the Spectrum into one circle. That was very powerful to me. The fact that she said her child's issue and did not go on a verbal spree of what the heck we all should do deserves two thumbs up. Thank you for that.

Nini's question: How does one support a cause without letting the fundraising drive out your energy and enthusiasm?

"You don’t have to fund raise. Fundraising is great and I’m good at it - I’m a barracuda when it comes to getting money for my organization but the key is volunteering. And really from my point of view just being a part of the community."

I loved that answer but I am still cracking up because I've watched this fab lady from back in the day (okay now showing my age... i watched her daddy G too) and I know exactly what sistagirl said on the Apprentice about fundraising, and I have adapted it and am making it my inner slogan phrase.... "It's called Creative Begging"

Tammy asked: What would you say to other moms who are experiencing those same challenges?

A blurb from that answer: I’d say to the moms be a little patient. I wasn’t so patient with Rodney. I was so focused on my son and not on my marriage. In hindsight I would be more sensitive now to how he needed to process the diagnosis on his own in his own time. Men process things differently and you need to be supportive of each other.

Gina..... You’ve talked a lot about your ‘family approach’ to autism. What advice would you give to other moms about helping siblings find and define ‘their important role’ in the family approach?

Holly replied: Siblings are key. It’s important to make sure they are part of the journey and part of the process of helping.

I really dug this answer..... If anyone knows how we do it at Autism in Long Beach.... Siblings inclusion in events, in the home, in public and respect for their place in our family is a priority.

Kathleen asked... Three of my four children are on very different parts of the spectrum. Their needs are as diverse as they are. Anyone who is involved in the autism/advocacy community understands what that means. I have found however, the rest of the world does not. How does one go about raising awareness-that this is a spectrum disorder?

"Its never going to be easy to get people to understand it but what I'd do is just be patient with people because when people don’t understand something they are afraid of it. So just be super patient and keep trying to help people understand, give them literature, send them to a website" ~Holly Robinson Peete

Are you kidding me??? Monopoly Live.... you are robbing my family of Cheating! Every child should have the right to sit across from their sibling and hide money, grab a few gold $500 dollar bills when the family is distracted, and the fun of channeling dirtbag Landlords while selling property at the price higher than the worth! What is wrong with you Hasbro???!!! This was one of my Rites of Passage!

C'mon, in the real world I live an honest life, I pay my taxes, I go back to the checker if she gave me to much change, hell I even ask to speak to a Supervisor to praise a customer service employee who does mediocre to excellent service, and I am purposely in over-tipper. I think of others, I really do! But let me tell you something, when it comes to board games, I am a dirty little cheater and I love it!!! Don't you dare get up to pee during Chutes and Ladders or ya may find yourself at the bottom of the Slide! You asked me for 6's in go fish, I may decide not to have any.. you can't see my hand!

Yes I am a proud game board cheater! I don't take it into the real world so calm down. Just give me back my Monopoly because I feel ripped off! Those were the best days taunting my little sister by making up rules along the way. Now you have a tower who tells us the rules?? A mechanical voice that points out when we cheat? Freaking property pieces that look like credit cards??

My Funny Valentine....

It just hit me... I think this is the first Valentines Day I wasn't bitter. I wasn't thinking about the Man next to me who wasn't treating me right that day. I wasn't thinking about how I "wish I were in a relationship". I wasn't thinking about any of that. The thought of a Man didn't cross my mind until this morning when I saw my Facebook News Feed of all the gifts gals got. Then, when I saw them all I thought was "thats nice". And kept it pushing. I was also thinking about how I feel I don't really have anything to blog about. I saw the "I heart faces" red theme but... I still kept it pushing. Why am I going to join a photo contest that only selects winners that have professional looking photos. I don't mean that in a mean way. I really like the group and the photo's are beautiful. If you are a professional photographer, or take professional like pics.. I suggest that challenge. I am merely stating a fact. So I kept it pushing.

What I mean by keeping it pushing is I keep moving forward. I no longer interact with people and things that I have nothing in common with. More importantly I am not bitter. I am so excited to realize this morning that I am achieving that Self-Content, Self-Confident goal. The goal where I acknowledge my own worth. I went through some bad relationships and even a failed marriage. About 3 years ago when it was all said and done I made a decision to stop giving my body and my mind to men who don't deserve it. I've been celibate since. I can actually say, I don't miss it. I told myself until my 13 year old has moved out of the home and off to college I will not date. Instead I will take that time to reflect on why I choose the wrong men. I will take responsibility for my actions. I am now focused on myself and children. Today I realize I am actually beginning to succeed in that dream.

Yesterday I spent the day with the best Valentines a gal could ask for.....

This is a great self-help book/pamphlet for newly diagnosed families. If you know anyone whom has just found out their family member or friend is on the Spectrum I highly recommend this book. It is small and light and can fit discretely in your pocket. I know a lot of "newbies" to our world are just trying to figure things out themselves and aren't ready yet for the worlds opinions, this is definitely the book for them. Michele C. Brooke did a great job sticking to ways for us to make our lives easier. She stayed away from all the big "debate" topics and stuck to simply embracing your child and figuring out how they learn and thrive. I enjoy how she explained The Autism Sisterhood. She stated that everyone is welcome even men. The Autism Sisterhood is built more on unity and discovery than on cliques. She shares ideas more than struggles.

Michele Brooke helps the reader to see through the diagnosis and into the child. She gives great tips on what books, video's, and activities she's found to be helpful to educate and interact with her child. When it comes to Special Needs, I've always appreciated an Author who lists resources so that when I finish their book I know where to turn to next.

I loved the fact that she stated her book was short because we Mothers of Special Needs Children rarely find time to sit and read a whole book. She was really thinking about us during the creation of this book. I like that she encourages the reader to pass the book on to other Mothers. It's not about sales to her, it's about Self-help.

It is definitely a must read for newly diagnosed families. Thank you Michele C. Brooks for sticking to the topic and not going off into the great debates. I am hoping that you write another book, busy parent's need more Authors like you.

Sunday's In My City, Farmer's Market

One of my dreams has been to have my own Library for Autistic Families. This weekend I got a little closer to my goal. I received a call earlier this week from the woman who runs Farmer's Market and she said I could set up my booth there. I set up an Autism Resource table for families to gather information. There are pamphlets on local Therapists, Services, IEP Attorney's, etc. I also have a monthly Calendar of Local Events. My second table is a Mini-Library. Filled with Autisic Authors, non-Fiction, Fiction, Self Help, Dietary, and Children's Books. The families fill our a Library Card and bring me the book back within two weeks. If they need it longer they can call me for an extension. The resource table and Library are FREE! I sell bags and backpacks with my Logo on it for an inexpensive price. I am hoping to start selling art, and jewelry made by persons and family affected by Autism. I am also working on a resource table of business cards and flyers of local businesses and Non-profits that support Autism In Long Beach.

What is Chewlry? It is a sensory aid. A wearable and chewable necklace for our children. My son is a constant chewer and bites holes through his shirts and sometimes through me! He is also getting to be the age where the baby look isn't as cute. Thats where the black and white Chewlry comes in handy. You can match it to almost any outfit and looks like wearable art.

Sometimes in life we get so busy we forget those who've helped us along the way. I strive not to be that person. However, there is someone I keep meaning to thank and never quite get around to doing so. Lorna from Kids Companion! She makes Chewlry. She was very supportive of my first Autism event. I was so nervous and needed help. She reached out to me from another state and sent me a necklace as a giveaway prize! One of our moms received it and loved it!! She's Expecting!!!

So I'm super duper excited! Let me make it clear I said SHE not ME! I'd be outta my rabbit ass mind to have another kid! Not my daughter either... so hold off on calling me Grandma folks!

Let me rewind a bit. All throughout Middle School & High School I got the crap teased out of me. This is pre Brangelina & Madonna days before adopting Black kids was this hip....

Well life in School was constant teasing... Black girl with white parents + Slightly Chubby + Talks like a white girl = Constant ridicule! But don't cry for me Argentina.....

I was a tough little one. When little black kids would tease me and say I thought I was white I would reply with "Um excuse me I'm African, full blooded Tutsi... how the hell can I think I'm white?" then I'd usually say something smart ass like "Do you even know where your from?" Then I'd throw on Combat boots or Monkey boots, a red plaid skirt and some fishnets and jump around singing & bustin moves while blasting Billy Idol's Dancing With Myself on my Ghetto Blaster!

Anyways back to the story... so you see I was a bit friendless... and I really didn't care. I did have a few friends though. There were a handful of kids that loved my weirdness and we have remained close until this day. There was one friend though.... my friend Lourdes who I hadn't seen since right after High School. Her and her sis Dahl were the sweetest girls ever! Really beautiful on the inside and out. We lost touch.

A consistant friend of mine was Kristin. She lived around the corner. She was 2 1/2 years younger and her brother was in my grade. Scott. All the girls loved Scott. He was like a brother to me so I thought it was pretty funny.

What was really funny was when people tried to befriend Kristin and I to get near Scott. Sooo Transparent! The funny thing is... they still do. LOL! So, with Kristin and my age difference (which is a big gap when your little) we didn't hang out much until we got older. Which is probably why our friendship lasted, lol! Besides we had our kids around the same time and they became friends as well!

Kristin is doing really good for herself and lives in Hawaii.

So Kristin and I are having a Battle of the Baby T's. Kinda like Battle of the Bands... but way cuter!!! We have been going back and forth through inbox one upping each other on our little nephews present! I can't tell you hers in case it gets back to Dez... don't wanna ruin the surprise. I will show you mine. Most of my IRL friends only come to my blog when I post something on my Facebook. How do I know this? Because they are forever asking me for the link. Plus they would stop to pour a drink or eat some Nachos before figuring out how to scroll down my side bar to find my archives then figure out how to go through them!

So even though Kristin is in the lead I've done good at finding and buying my Battle of the Baby Tees for Lourdes... Here's what I got so far...

I am beyond upset. What is going on in Cyberspace Security today? In the last two weeks I've had two different issues with my Yahoo account. The first one was I selected certain people to send an email to and it sent it to my whole darn contact list.

The second issue is apparently at 6:54 pm some stupid IPAD application sent this out claiming it was from me!!!! Look my email is the sender!!! What the heck??? I was napping at the time. I would never send this crap to my friends. I wouldn't wish Spam on someone I disliked!!

Open Adoption in 2011?"

I'm committed to going home this year,

and volunteering.

In cases where the people involved are responsible, and the safety of the child is not in question, I encourage and support Open Adoption. I believe that my story is living proof of the importance of Open Adoption. My parents are very special people.

My hopes and commitments for Open adoption is to visit and volunteer at Orphanages during my trip home this year. I am hoping that my research now will allow me to speak to the correct officials in my homeland. I want to encourage policies be put into place allowing Adoptive Parents to bring adopted children back to visit without fearing for their safety.

I will also be doing some Volunteer work at the Komo Centre for Autistic Children. I am 42 years old and my Adoption is still touching and uplifting others. In my personal case, I feel, If I wasn't raised knowing who I am and where I came from I would not be able to reach out to others in need. I thank my Birth Mother, My Parents and the Peace Corps for having the maturity to all work together to raise me.

I will be participating as a member of Train 4 Autism, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing together a community of athletes, physically-active, and socially conscious people who are committed to raising awareness and funds for research and treatment for those living with autism and their families.
